FEU Shipping Explained: Dimensions, Capacity, and Solutions

Ports worldwide process millions of containers annually, with two standard sizes leading the industry: TEU and FEU. While we’ve previously explored TEU shipping, today, we’ll break down FEU shipping, its dimensions, and why it’s the go-to choice for businesses moving larger cargo volumes.

What is FEU shipping?

FEU(or FFE), short for Forty-Foot Equivalent Unit, is a general measurement in the shipping industry used to quantify containerized cargo capacity. One FEU represents the space taken by a 40-foot container. This unit is vital in streamlining global freight operations, making it easier to estimate shipping costs, optimize storage, and improve handling efficiency.

Dimensions of a forty-foot equivalent unit

A standard FEU is typically 40 feet (12.2 meters) in length, 8 feet (2.4 meters) in width, and 8 feet 6 inches (2.6 meters) in height.

In terms of weight, the maximum gross mass for a dry cargo FEU is 67,200 lbs (30,480 kg), with the container itself weighing 8,820 lbs (4,000 kg). It leaves a net load capacity of approximately 58,380 lbs (26,730 kg).

With a volume capacity of 58-59 cubic meters (CBM), FEU shipping is well-suited for transporting a wide range of goods, from consumer products to industrial equipment.

What can fit into an FEU container?

Depending on the container’s specifications, an FEU shipping container typically accommodates between 26,000 and 28,000 kg of cargo. As for pallet capacity, an FEU can hold around 20 standard pallets (1200mm x 1000mm) or up to 23 Euro pallets (1200mm x 800mm).

Types of FEU shipping containers

  • Standard FEUs: The most widely used container type is approximately 8 feet 6 inches tall. It is ideal for dry goods, machinery, and general cargo.
  • High Cube FEUs: With an additional foot in height (9 feet 6 inches), high cube FEUs accommodate taller cargo or oversized goods that require more space.
  • Reefer FEUs: Equipped with built-in refrigeration units, reefer FEUs are essential for temperature-sensitive shipments such as fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals.
These container types provide versatile solutions for different shipping requirements, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of international logistics.

Why do we use FEU in shipping?

Ample storage capacity

As the largest standard container, an FEU offers plenty of space to accommodate various types of cargo.

Cost-effective solution

Shipping a single 40ft container proves more economical than using two 20ft containers (TEU). It reduces shipping costs while maximizing capacity, especially for bulk shipments.

Enhanced security

Built with robust steel walls and secure locking mechanisms, FEU containers are theft-proof.

Cargo protection

These containers safeguard goods from moisture, dust, and harsh weather conditions as they are designed to be airtight and weather-resistant.

Multi-purpose applications

FEU containers are widely used as temporary storage units or converted into pop-up offices beyond shipping.
